People involved in the criminal legal system experience substantially higher rates of trauma exposure than the general population.  Although there has been growing interest in trauma-informed approaches across the criminal justice system, little is known about how to implement and sustain these approaches in community supervision settings. 

To address this gap, the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) is partnering with the HILS Lab to design, implement, and evaluate the North Carolina Trauma-Informed and Engaged Supervision (NC TIES) initiative. As part of this initiative, specialty officers will receive training and subsequent sustainability sessions on trauma-informed supervision from Trauma-informed DESistance Supervision (TIDES), LLC. These officers also meet with implementation champions to troubleshoot challenges and discuss use of the TIES approach.   

This study will define the elements of the NC TIES model, examine its impact, provide insights into what supports or hinders implementation, and identify what’s needed to sustain trauma-informed supervision over time.
